Thousands of film enthusiasts gathered to watch Oppenheimer this weekend, and even though the film is doing exceptionally well worldwide, there’s one line in the movie that has left a lot of people reeling. So much so, in fact, that it is said to have offended ‘one billion people’.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Oppenheimer (@oppenheimermovie)As many of you will know by now, Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the construction of the atomic bomb.It has received a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes since its release, which is excellent for a historical thriller. It has also made $174 million at the box office, so it’s clearly doing well. The synopsis reads: “During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Oppenheimer (@oppenheimermovie)Despite its success, there is one line in the flick that has left people so offended they are calling for a boycott of the film.In real life, Oppenheimer was fascinated by Hinduism. This fascination is a part of Christopher Nolan’s film, but the way in which the Bhagwad Geeta, a Hindu scripture, is used in the film has left people deeply concerned.Journalist and founder of Save Culture Save India (SCSI) Uday Mahurkar wrote a letter to Nolan in relation to the topic.New stills of Christopher Nolan’s ‘OPPENHEIMER’ featuring Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Emily Blunt and Josh Peck. pic.twitter.com/3v9khGtQTv— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) July 7, 2023“It has come to our notice that the movie Oppenheimer contains a scene which makes a scathing attack on Hinduism,” he began.“As per social media reports, a scene in the movie shows a woman making a man read Bhagwad Geeta aloud while getting over him and doing sexual intercourse. She is holding Bhagwad Geeta in one hand, and the other hand seems to be adjusting the position of their reproductive organs.”Mahurkar went on: “The Bhagwad Geeta is one of the most revered scriptures of Hinduism. Geeta has been the inspiration for countless sanyasis, brahmcharis and legends who live a life of self-control and perform selfless noble deeds.”New stills of Cillian Murphy as J. Others, however, have argued that the film is “just art” and Mahurkar’s claims are “ridiculous.Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading…
