A heartwarming story of devotion to rescue dogs has taken an unexpected turn. Mike Haslam, 53, and his wife Liz, 49, recently ended their 25-year marriage after Mike issued an ultimatum - it was either him or her 30 rescue dogs. To the surprise of many, Liz chose her beloved canines, and she hasn't looked back since.
Liz, a mother of one, had a lifelong passion for dogs, growing up with them as her mother bred West Highland Terriers, and her father owned an animal food business. Seven years ago, the couple moved into a two-bedroom farmhouse in Barnham, Suffolk, with half an acre of land, where Liz decided to start a boarding kennel business and later founded BedforBullies, a charity that rescues Bull Terrier dogs.
As Liz's commitment to these rescue dogs grew, it led to tensions in her marriage. Mike, feeling pushed aside by the high demands of caring for the animals, gave her an ultimatum: him or the dogs. Liz made her choice, and Mike walked out. They haven't communicated since.
Reflecting on her decision, Liz said, "I thought after 25 years, he should know giving up the dogs was not what my intentions were. However, I was unwilling to part with my dogs. Consequently, he made the decision to leave, which was clearly his choice."
Even after the separation, Liz continues to welcome more dogs and has even extended her care to a homeless man. She spends approximately 18 hours a day looking after the dogs, including four daily walks, and invests hundreds of pounds each month in their medication and treatments.
Out of the 30 rescue dogs, at least 15 have demanding needs, including five that are deaf, two with one eye, three former fighting dogs, four with defects, and one with brain damage. Over the years, Liz has taken in around 200 rescue dogs and also looks after holiday dogs that help cover her rent and bills.
BedforBullies, her charity, solely relies on donations and takes on dogs that other rescues won't. Liz's dedication and love for these animals are unwavering, and despite financial challenges, including a substantial vet bill and rent arrears, she couldn't be happier with her decision.
Liz's story is a testament to the deep bond between humans and animals and the lengths some will go to care for those in need.
