Patrizia Cormos, 20, her friend Bianca Doros, 23, and her boyfriend Cristian Molnar, 25, embarked on a stroll along the Natisone River near Udine in the northern Friuli region on Friday, May 31. Unbeknownst to them, the river had become perilously swollen due to days of torrential rain.
As they sought higher ground on a tiny island in the river, the water rose rapidly. A harrowing video from the scene captured the trio hugging each other as they found themselves trapped in the rising waters. Giorgio Basile, the chief of the provincial firefighters in Udine, described the heartbreaking rescue attempt. “We threw them a rope, but they were swallowed up by the floodwaters in front of our eyes. We watched them disappear.”

Recovery Efforts After The Flash Flood
On Sunday, June 2, the bodies of Ms. Cormos and Ms. Doros were discovered approximately 0.6 miles from where they were last seen. The search for Mr. Molnar continues. Firefighters and other officials employed drones, boats, and divers in a concerted effort to locate him after the flash flood.

Basile highlighted the river’s treacherous conditions. He explained that “the main element is not so much the rain, it is the power of the river. The very strong currents. There are gorges and a backwash of water, and even for the experts, it is a particularly treacherous task.”
