The Rise of Live-Stream Challenges
The popularity of live-streaming platforms like Twitch, Kick, and YouTube has led to a surge in online challenges, often featuring daring and sometimes dangerous stunts. The COVID-19 pandemic further fueled this trend, as people sought entertainment and connection online.
The Fatal Stunt
Sun, a resident of eastern China, regularly hosted live-streams on the platform DouYu, where he had amassed 15,000 followers. In an attempt to boost his viewership, he introduced a spinning wheel challenge. The wheel featured a variety of items, including centipedes, geckos, mealworms, vinegar, eggs, and beer. Sun would consume whatever the wheel landed on, live on camera.

The Aftermath
Two days after the fateful live-stream, police discovered Sun unconscious in his room, with his computer still in live-stream mode. Food items used in the challenge were found on his desk. Sun’s videos were promptly removed from DouYu.

The Dangers of Consuming Reptiles and Insects
While the exact species of gecko and centipede Sun ingested remain unclear, consuming any type of reptile or insect can be hazardous.
