A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck early Monday, shaking Myanmar, southern China, and northern Thailand. Centered near the Myanmar-China border, the quake hit at 3:42 a.m. local time at a depth of 10 km, according to the USGS.Myanmar was hardest hit, declaring a state of emergency after at least 48 people were killed, over 300 injured, and many trapped under rubble.
In Lashio, entire buildings collapsed as rescue teams raced to find survivors. The quake was also felt strongly in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Thailand, prompting mass evacuations.“We heard a loud noise, and suddenly everything started shaking,” said Myo Thant, a local resident who escaped before his home collapsed.
