Pete Hegseth thought he looked suave as he walked in with his wife at a recent premiere at the Kennedy Center. But upon closer inspection, the internet noticed how Donald Trump’s aide, who has been vocal about military fitness since assuming his role under the current administration, may have squeezed himself into a super-tight suit.
In 2025, Hegseth announced strict new fitness standards for all military personnel. He went on to emphasize biannual fitness tests and daily physical training in not-so-colorful words. Hegseth said, “It’s tiring to look out at combat formations, or really any formation, and see fat troops. Likewise, it’s completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the country and the world. It’s a bad look. It is bad, and it’s not who we are.”
All active-duty personnel will be required to work out daily and take at least two fitness tests each year. The new mandate also includes a general service fitness test that will still account for an individual’s age but will require everybody to meet a “male standard.” The changes will apply to everybody in uniform. Calling the new age-normed fitness tests essential for combat readiness, Hegseth called for both men and women to meet the same physical standards.

Hegseth’s new policy introduces new weight and height standards. Body composition will be evaluated twice a year. It also mandates tough grooming standards to reinforce discipline. The policy sparked debate as soon as it hit the news. Critics feared that fewer women would qualify for combat roles.
At the Kennedy Center premiere of Melania, Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer Rauchet, showed up all dressed to the nines, but his suit drew unwarranted attention. Close-up photos from the event revealed that the top button on Hegseth’s blue suit jacket was under immense strain. It didn’t take long for social media users to revisit Hegseth’s harsh rhetoric about military fitness. One Instagram user took a jab at Hegseth under his photos shared by Radar Online: “Hey Pete, no fatties, remember?”

Political watchers and fashion police noted the suit’s poor tailoring and went on to mock Hegseth’s weight. One social media user snappily wrote, “Definitely……it’s the suit that’s the problem.”
Hegseth’s viral tight suit snaps sharply, in contrast to his earlier strict military fitness messaging. Social media didn’t fail to remind him of his own words as they wrote, “Pete’s popping out of his suit. Little fat for his army.” While one user bluntly asked, “Is he putting on weight?” another user straight-up dubbed him “a tubby Nahtzee.”
Well, the criticism didn’t stop him from ditching his bodysuits. The Trumper and his wife were spotted the next day sporting another tight-fitting suit on his way to Dan Scavino’s wedding. One could say that Hegseth’s public embrace of a hardline message on physical fitness, particularly within the military, has opened the door to conversations about his suits.

Last August, Hegseth epicly teamed with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the so-called “Pete & Bobby Challenge.” The duo completed 100 push-ups and 50 pull-ups in about five minutes alongside members of the armed services. Hegseth went on to explain the effort. He said that the workout aligned with the administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.

Now, social media critics are wondering if all of Hegseth’s talk about getting the military in shape is coming back to haunt him. What started as a low-key date-night photo op at a film premiere became another viral moment for the Secretary of War.
